4 Scams Involving Cryptocurrency That Are Gaining Popularity

A near-perfect storm is brewing when it comes to the way scam artists are using cryptocurrency to target seniors.

First, virtual currency is nearly untraceable as it goes from person to person. Second, while both consumers and retailers are catching on to how scammers have used gift cards as a way to pass funds, they now have a new way to do so. And with so many people not having a full understanding of how the world of cryptocurrency works, it is a new avenue that crooks are looking to exploit.

Much like gift-card payment requests, however, no legitimate business will demand that you pay via crypto, so keep that in mind as Oak Hill Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing brings you these four popular scams that criminals are using involving cryptocurrency.

  1. QR Code

An email is sent to someone claiming to be from a legitimate company like PayPal. The email says that there was an incorrect charge on her account, and by using the QR code provided, they can go to an ATM that deals in crypto to deposit the money in their bank account. But the QR code converts the person’s cash to Bitcoin and sends the money to the scammers.

  1. Fake Email From Family

Another scam is one where someone will hack a family member’s social media page and then send a direct message to a relative saying that they doubled their money off of this investment and that they should do the same. But the link will convert money into crypto and send it right to the thieves.

  1. Online Love Scam

Criminals have been on online dating sites and posing as potential love interests. They eventually gain the trust of someone to invest in a legit cryptocurrency and then transfer the investment into the scammer’s platform. At that point, the money is gone.

  1. Fake Job Offer

With work-from-home jobs becoming more and more of the norm, there is an increase of fake job offers out there. The scammers will say that the person needs to send the fake company money in order to have equipment to perform the job sent to their home. The people are instructed to send the money via a Bitcoin ATM, which goes right to the scammers.

4 Signs That Your Shoulder Pain May Require Surgery to Fix

While not as widespread as hip and knee replacements, shoulder-replacement surgery is becoming a common surgery for people as they age and deal with wear-and-tear or injuries.

Fractures and rotator cuff tears are among injuries that can require a joint replacement, and damage from arthritis is another reason.

No matter the cause, there are tell-tale signs when the pain is too much to bear and surgery is a realistic option. Oak Hill Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has details on four signs that your shoulder might need surgery.

  1. Limiting Daily Activities

If shoulder pain is so severe that it either causes trouble with or doesn’t allow you to complete activities of daily living like showering, going to the bathroom, or getting dressed, surgery should be discussed in order for you to get these freedoms back.

  1. Keeps You From Sleeping

Another sign that surgery may be required is if your shoulder hurts while you are at rest or lying in bed—especially if the pain is keeping you from being able to sleep.

  1. Stiffness and Weakness

Serious shoulder injuries will make the arm as a whole feel weaker, and stiffness is a common sign of advanced arthritis.

  1. Radiating Pain

Pain radiating from your shoulder and down your arm is not a good sign, as that indicates the injury is severe enough that your muscles are being adversely affected.

If you are dealing with one or more of these symptoms, you should talk to your doctor. He or she may refer you to an orthopedic surgeon to see if shoulder-replacement surgery is the best path for you.

Oak Hill Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing on Foods That Could Combat COVID-19

As we wait for the majority of Americans to have the ability to be vaccinated from COVID-19, researchers are learning more and more about the virus that has taken over every aspect of our lives over the past year.

In addition to taking better care of ourselves through diet and exercise—along with boosting our immune system through vitamin C and zinc—researchers are finding that some foods may also give us a leg up in fighting the virus.

Oak Hill Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at two foods and beverage that exhibit those properties, and we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what we’re talking about!

  1. Foods With Potentially Protective Properties

Two foods were found to have chemical compounds that can help block the destructive effects of the COVID-19 vaccine. They are muscadine grapes (a grape that’s native to the southern United States) and dark chocolate. The chemical compound works by blocking an enzyme that helps the virus replicate.

In the foods mentioned above, computer simulations found that the chemical compounds in cacao powder, dark chocolate, and two varieties of the muscadine grapes were able to accomplish the desired effect and were later confirmed by lab results.

The results shows that dark chocolate and cacao powder cut the virus’s ability to replicate by about half, while the muscadine grapes inhibited it completely.

  1. Drink Green Tea

In the study, the chemical compounds in green tea were found to have the same effect as that from the muscadine grape. Green tea has a whole host of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, so this doesn’t come as much of a surprise.

It’s important to note that this research is in its infancy and doesn’t mean these foods will protect you from COVID-19, but each could be a small piece to solving a bigger puzzle.

Oak Hill Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing on the Best Foods and Drinks to Help Lower Blood Pressure

Nearly one third of the United States’ population is living with high blood pressure. This increases the likelihood of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.

Prescription medication is an option, but there are plenty of natural ways to lower blood pressure, and those should be explored before relying on medication that can cause unpleasant side effects. Exercising and not smoking are two immediate ways to lower blood pressure, and the foods you eat are a major contributing factor as well.

With that in mind, Oak Hill Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing share five foods that can help lower your blood pressure.

Replacing salty or sweet snacks with healthy ones is one key to lowering your blood pressure. Pumpkin seeds are a good choice because they’re high in magnesium and have also been found to lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

This can be eaten on their own or as a topping on salads. They are high in vitamins K, A, and C, and they are also high in nitrates, which help widen blood vessels.

Served roasted or grilled, asparagus can be prepared in a number of ways and are a component of the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). Leafy greens are also a key part of the DASH diet.

Bananas are low in calories but packed with nutrients. They are high in potassium, which helps heart health, and magnesium.

Fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids are recommended to reduce blood pressure. In addition to supplements, great fatty fish options include salmon, herring, mackerel, and sardines.
